how do i make an entire drive readalbe and writeable by all users through ftp? i have /dev/hdb1 mounted to /usr/ftp and the permissions set to allow them full control, but they dont have it. i tried setting them all to a group then giving the group access but that also didnt work. how sould i do this? they need full access to all files, directories, and sub-directories.

If you set your ftp users as being part of the same group then if you set rw permissions for the group on the filesystem then you should be set. Maybe you have to use chmod -R so it recursively changes the permissions.
Even better,
1) tell us exactly what error message you get.
2) try changing the same file through a sh session instead of ftp so we can be sure it's something in the filesystem itself instead of the ftp configuration.
3) try restarting the ftp daemon after you add the users to the group and change the perms for the dir (I'm not sure if strictly necessary).
4) post the exact error messages, config files, etc so we have a little bit more info.

for testing purposes i set up 2 users. then uploaded a file, disconnected, then connected with the other user to see if i could delete/move/remane/overwrite it and i get permission denied. both the users are in the same group. how do i set the drive to have full access by all people from that group?
