I just spotted that this package exists... I can't find any documentation for why it exists. The related gentoo-kernel-bin package is fairly obviously for people who don't want to compile their kernel locally. Is it just that the gentoo-kernel package ships with a semi-sane .config and compiles automatically on download? I don't find any reference to it in the wiki (and searching the forums for package names is unreliably, since the search box eats the "-").

As mentioned in the blog post, the biggest use for it is automation with @world upgrades. You can also provide your own .config (see savedconfig USE)

Personally haven't tried it since I also need to do extra procedures, but for most people using this sounds like how it should've always have been. I imagine proper documentation will be made and eventually it'll end up in the handbook, right now it's still a new ~unstable feature though, and the ebuild will warn you of that.

Your tip works with other search engines as well (such as DuckDuckGo).

Good idea using an external search, and thanks for the link to the blog. Looks like, once this has seen some more testing, it'll make getting Gentoo up and running simpler for most use cases.

DDG has a shortcut for that: !fgentoo
