I think I must be missing something simple, but I can't seem to find documentation on it anywhere. I have a ton of scsi devices, between a scsi cdrom, and the multiple usb card-readers I have installed and etc. The problem I have is that they keep moving around (sometimes the cd will be host1, sometimes it's host0, etc, depending on the order the modules are loaded. Also, each time I mount/unmount the memory card, it makes a new host item).
My question is, is there a way to make things like that automount? As in, when I plug the card in, it detects that a new host item has been created and mount it under a standard mountpoint, depending on the device type. Unmounting could be automated, too, but if it's not, that's fine. I just don't want to have to guess which host it is everytime and sudo to force a mount (I like fstab). Any suggestions? My guess was that hotplug should do it, but I have no idea where to start |

You might want to test udev, the upcoming replacement for devfs. As far as I understand it's purpose is to solve exactly your problems. See for example the Gentoo udev Guide and especially Writing udev rules referenced from there.
I'm running a pure udev system now, but the most exotic thing in my system (and in fact the only hotplugged one) is a USB memory stick, so I cannot really provide a guide to setting it up for your diversity of devices. |
