If i were to run mac on linux, would i be able to emulate windows programs very well on an ibook? i'm interested in doing live sound production, but i don't want to have to buy 2 laptops to use all the programs i want.

if you're talking about Wine, AFAIK it doesn't run on powerpc:

i never tried it, but wine probably won't work on powerpc

wine won't work, since as dabooty mentioned, it's not an emulator, so it must run on x86. Same with win4lin and vmware. There is bochs, but I've never tried it, and have no idea how well it might work.

The only thing I can think of that would be sure to work would be to run Virtual PC (a true emulator) on MacOS in Mac-on-linux, as pictured in the mol 'Pandora's Box' screenshot (versions shown are out of date, but newer versions should work as well). Don't know what performance would be like, but it might be worth testing.

You mention you want to do sound production; even if they're not identical with the Windows programs you use, are there no equivalent linux apps that will do what you want?

Why would you want to run windows for sound production? I always thought MacOS whas the os of choice that...
Ozonator's solution would have you run 3 operating systems on top of each other (windows-on-mac-on-linux). I doubt this would be a good idea performance wise.
If it's possible, I'd install osx with virtual pc, and run both windows and gentoo in virtual pc.
Haven't tried it, but this should give you the best of 3 worlds, and would only require you to emulate once.
Another option would be to dualboot osx and gentoo, with windows running either in bochs or vmware.

I have to wonder which software you're looking at for your audio work. I'm taking courses in sound design and all our work is done on Mac over here. What are you looking to do specifically?
