I installed gentoo without error (took three tries), and emerged gnome. I followed all the steps in the instructions but found that gdm was not there. I emerged that, but when I try to log into gnome it says it cannot be found. I just spent 8 hours waiting for the emerge to download. Does anyone have an idea?
As a side note, My first install GRP went ok. I tried to emerge openoffice and basically ruined the setup. Don't ask how. It just broke. I had to install again and blew it setting up grub-my fault. Now my third install- fourth day into it- is throwing up all over me at the last minute. I enjoy learning about Linux, but what does one do when a working install breaks? I don't even want to think about having to go through this again-simply for the sake of time. How many of us have a long term working install of Gentoo?
Thanks, John |

I've set XSESSION="Gnome" and DISPLAYMANGER=gdm in rc.conf. So I boot up, get the nvidia slash screen, then the gdm loggin. Once I log in I get the error. |

Any Ideas on this. I tried to update gnome in an effort to fix the problem and this is what I get:
emerge -u gnome
Calculating dependencies...done!
emerge (1 of 31) net-www/epiphany-1.0.4 to /
md5 src_uri epiphany-1.0.4.tar.bz2
*you need mozilla-1.4+ copiled against gtk+-2
*export USE=tk2"; emerge mozilla -p
!!!error: net-www/epiphany-1.0.4 failed.
!!! function pkg_setup, line 43, Exitcode 0
!!! Need Mozilla compiled with gtk+-2.0!
XFCE4 is working find but gnome ¨Cannot be found¨. Any help is apreciated. Exuse the noobe questions, but how do I cut and past from xterm into a text window?
Thanks |

you can highlight text, and paste by hitting the middle mouse button.
as for the gtk thing, you said "tk2" TK is entirely different than GTK (and it's in version 8 at the moment, i believe)...
you want to do this (i don't believe that export works)
USE="gtk2" emerge mozilla |

Thanks, I had tried to run that command before bit it would not work. I emerged xfce4 then tried and it worked. So Gnome is running now but I cannot emerge xsceensaver. The error is ¨could download control-center-1.4.0.5.tar.bz2¨. Looks like itś a problem with the download site. Iĺl open a specific post if it continues. Thanks |
