After completing the basic installation of gentoo on my HP Paviilion (following the handbook), i rebooted.
The output looks normal at first until | Code: | Mounting boot
[FAILED] Failed to mount boot
See 'systemctl status boot.mount for details
[DEPEND] Dependency failed for Local File System
[ OK ] Stopped Dispatch Password Requests to Console Directory Watch

There follow a few more "[ OK ]" messages and then | Code: | You are in emergency mode. After logging in type "journalctl -xb" to view
system logs, "systemctl reboot" to reboot, "systemctl default" or "exit"
to boot into default mode
Cannot open access to console, the root account is locked.

All i can do now is press Enter, which causes the message above being repeated (all other keys are ignored).
In the BIOS setup under "Boot Options" i see: | Code: | UEFI Boot order
USB Flash Drive/USB Hard Disk
USB CD/DVD ROM Drive
>> OS Boot Manager
! Network Adapter |
The '>>' stands for a graphic arrow-like symbol; when i looked at the Boot Order *before* installation, there was no such arrow.
When i change the order, the arrow moves along with "OS Boot Manager".
So even though the USB Flash Drive is first in the boot order, it is ignored and the boot proceeds from the disk
Is there any way to fix this?
If not: is there any way to reset the BIOS to its original settings (without the arrow)?

Do you have activated the "CONFIG_DEVTMPFS_MOUNT" option in the kernel?

I did not actively set this option.
So if it wasn't the default, it is not activated.
But anyway i am unable to rebuild the kernel with new configs, because i cannot boot from the USB stick. |

| In the BIOS setup, apart from changing the boot order, you will certainly be able to deactivate the entry "OS Boot Manager". Then you can boot from the stick again. |

I think you mistake, this is not your bios boot order, but your UEFI boot order
And this should be read as
- boot from an USB key first if the key is UEFI ready
- boot from USB CD/DVD ROM Drive if the CD/DVD is UEFI ready
- boot from >> OS Boot Manager if UEFI ready
and your >> sign is certainly telling you, out of the list, it has only found OS Boot Manager as a valid UEFI booting device
use an UEFI usb key, or look for legacy boot options, or for bios boot order and you put legacy boot option first |

It looks like i somehow damaged my USB stick during installation (my laptop does not have /dev/sda but /dev/nvme0n1 =.
Anyway, after making a new bootable installatio stick, i could boot from ot again.

At work, I have a coworker who has damaged 1 USB stick and 1 USB external hard drive. So you are not alone  |
