I have alsa 0.98 built as modules into my 2.4.20 kernel.
Everything seems to work unless I reboot or re-start x.
When I start everything after a kernel recompile and load the modules.
emerge alsa-drivers, modules-update it works.
When I log into kde, enlightment or gnome, it is OK, but only the first time. If I switch from one window manager or back into the same one no sound. If I reboot no sound. In kde I get /dev/dsp busy or not found error on startup.
What occurs differently the first time modules are built after a comile as opposed to a reboot?

That seems really weird. Do the system logs (dmesg or /var/log/everything/current) give any info? You could try an older version of alsa otherwise.
Try telling artsd in kde to use alsa for sound (as opposed to oss with /dev/dsp) - that may solve part of the problem. Also, are you sure the sound isn't muted? |

Somehow kde sound was set to auto, I switched it to alsa and it is a bit more stable. Now it works when I reboot. Sometimes xmms hangs if I don't pass
I emerged alsa-xmms but it is still a little weird.
xmovie and totem need to be the only programs using the sound or they hang or just no sound. It is usable now. The KDE settings on auto were messing things up.
If I log into kde then gnome no sound. If I log into gnome it works, but once in log into kde the sound support goes away in gnome.
I don't have esound running in rc-update. Should I turn it on?

| Hmm... it seems like you must be running into some instability with the OSS emulation and your sound card... you could try searching on the forum for "alsa" and your sound chipset name and see if anyone else had problems like that. I have a sound blaster 16 PCI (es1371) and it seems to work fine with OSS emulation and 0.9.8, but I haven't tested it a great deal yet. I was also trying to get software mixing working with mixed results... |

I tried kernel 2.6 still havimg sound issues ....
