I just got an APC XS 1000 and have connected it to my Gentoo computer. I am running kernel 2.6 MM5.

I have a usb printer that works so I am confident I have usb compiled in to my kernel.

There is a /dev/usb/lp0 and /dev/usb/hid/hiddev0. I assume that this means my APC UPS is not being detected?

If I run usbview I can see both the usb printer and the APC UPS.

Code:
$cat /proc/bus/usb/devices:

T:  Bus=01 Lev=00 Prnt=00 Port=00 Cnt=00 Dev#=  1 Spd=12  MxCh= 3
B:  Alloc=  0/900 us ( 0%), #Int=  0, #Iso=  0

It looks like it is being detected.

apcupsd says it has started but ps fax does not show that is is running. I experimented with various values in the config file but it still will not run. Unfortunately I cannot subscribe to the apcups mailing list. It seems to be down.

I tried nut but when I run the driver it says I haven't defined a driver, yet I did.

So I suspect this has something to do with the usb driver. When I connect the APC UPS to my second usb port should I have a second entry in either my /dev/usb or /dev/usb/hid directories?

Thx

[Update]
The author of acupsd says this is a bug with the 2.6 kernel.

I believe I was running 2.6-test9-mm5 at the time. I am running test11-mm1 right now and haven't tried it again.

It is so much easier to talk to the UPS with Windows but unfortunately I want my Linux computers to shutdown properly. I tried nut but it only worked using the hid interface which did not expose much information from the UPS.

Just FYI
