In a recent system update sys-auth/elogind was installed. (It is now a default part of the Desktop profile. [1]) Afterwards, I couldn't use the power button to successfully use hibernation.
Turned out that while upto now I was managing the power button using acpid, newly installed elogind acted on power button press too. So, while acpid hibernated, when I returned from the hibernation cycle, elogind shutdown the system.
For now, I have asked elogind to ignore power button press. (By changing value from 'poweroff' to 'ignore' in /etc/elogind/logind.conf.)
