I've been tinkering with pfaedit, and now have a custom TTF font that I would like to install on my system. How do I do it? |

Make a folder, preferable in /usr/share/fonts. Copy your fonts into that new folder then open up /etc/fonts/fonts.conf and add <dir>/usr/share/fonts/NEWFONTDIR</dir> inbetween the fontconfig tags.. Then run fc-update. |

I do not have fc-update. Which package is it in?
[edit] Argh... the brain-damage that typos can cause. I bet you meant rc-update.
[edit] OK... running rc-update does nothing except print instructions on what to do with rc-update. What am I supposed to do with it? |

first it's better to put the string into /etc/fonts/local.conf.
The command i think it was fc-cache

Boy. I'm on a roll.. Yes, it's fc-cache, not update.....
Either local.conf or fonts.conf will work. I added that to fonts.conf myself... |

fonts.conf is likely to be overwritten/modifed by fontconfig itself
local.conf is designed to be used for configuration.

Just wanted to add, if you want, you can also drop fonts into $HOME/.fonts and they'll be avaible for your account. It is less of a hassle for a single user machine. |

OK, font installed and cached.
Now, what voodoo do I need to do to get openoffice to use it? >.>
[edit] answered my own question, I needed to add the font via oopadmin. Also needed 'xauth +localhost' to run anything X-related as root. |
