Greetings...
How do I know whether the default Gentoo support certain hardware?
Currently I want to know about Adaptec 19160...

Thanks...

Maybe you should check if during booting from the Gentoo LiveCD it detects your hardware properly ( I think by default everything is stuck into the kernel ). Or... you can download a Knoppix CD and boot from it. If everything works fine then Gentoo will work even better :) Good luck.

Well, that's a way...
but I don't have the hardware in hand
so I can't test it with those CD.
and don't know which card to get...
basically 19160 is enough.
but of course I can get a 29160N or 29160...

Here's how I do it:

I go to google and search for the device and linux. E.g. Linux "Adaptec 19160" (this card is apparently supported btw). As a general rule the piece of hardware is supported if you get many results containing questions/complaints about setting it up

If you already have the hw in your box it also makes sense to search for the vendor and device id in certain cases (like if you have a no name ethernet card and you can't find it by name - such no-name devices are usually run by very cheap and popular chipsets. Those id's can be retrieved with lspci -n.
