best way to remote log in to a machine from in a local area

Dear All,

I am running a local area subnet environment with three machines all running gentoo amd 64 connected to the an individual router.

I have got ssh working between the machine such that I can move files and share file trees and directories between them etc.

I am interested to see if I can sue the ssh (or something similar) to perform a remote login to from one machine to another in such a way as I could execute jobs on the host machine using the cpu facility of the remote machiine.

For example, I have two of the three available machines running in the network at present. One is a kaveri box and the other is an FX 8350 machine.

Would it be possible to remote log in to the FX 8350 machine from the kaveri box so that I could run e.g. emerge on executable files sitting on the kaveri box?

I am currently trying to emerge deepin desktop v20 on the kaveri box.


I tried using the FX8350 has a helper machine using distcc.

The problem with that is that not a great deal of work is sent to the helper machine by distcc inn practice.

The kaveri box ends up doing all the work pretty much.

Farting around with distcc compilation parameters and load balances doesn't help much.

I think the FX8350 can handle the emerge job better than the kaveri box.

Is it possible to use ssh to do this in some way?

You could set up the FX8350 as a binpkg host. The other machine then doesn't need to compile everything, emerge behaves more like a binary distro.

A long time ago, I used to remote log in to machines and submit numerical computation jobs on them running in background queue.

The machines were more powerful than the machine I used. They were local to me.

I would remotely log in and check their progress from time to time and then when they had finished I would obtain the log files and look at the results, analyse them and carry on with more simulations.

Perhaps that sort of thing is not an option here.

If you try to do the binhost compiled package server warehouse thing it could be cumbersome.

Deepin only really works if you upgrade the entire system to gentoo unstable.

So to me it would seem that I would need to upgrade the stable gentoo install I have on the FX 8350 machine to unstable and then install deepin desktop on it and then let the kaveri box access it with the getbinpkg command etc set up in the make.conf file or however you do it........

But if you wanted to let any other machines use the FX 8350 binhost capability then they would only have compiled unstable binary package sets to recruit from.......

That suggests to me that I would need to have two installations of gentoo running back to back on the FX 8350 machine.

One would be a gentoo stable install.
