I recently did a first time install of a package media-gfx/cura.
The first model I opened crashed, and after checking the cura github, found out that a newer release fixes this issue.

Since I've also recently started playing around with ebuilds - decided to not compromise and upgrade instead of going downwards.

Now the question I have - should I bother the gentoo package maintainer, offering this updated version?
It needed around 6 package version bumps, and 3 of those needed fresh patches.

My train of thought here being - since I've already done the grunt work (that's all there was to it), I'd presume the maintainer would only be happy to skip past the annoying parts.

I'm not familiar with the Gentoo package maintenance/version upgrading processes, so decided to ask around here before stepping on someones toes unnecessarily.

MyOde,

You should either file a new bug if there isn't one already or create a github pull request.
If you open the bug first, the pull request can close the bug :)
That's always a good idea,

If you are not careful, you may become a proxyed maintainer and that's the start of the slippery slope to becoming a dev.

Whatever you decide, you should share your work. Thats the open source way.

I indeed had not seen that one.
I think I'll avoid duplicating the effort for now.
And the version in the PR should also eliminate the bug that I was facing.

Thanks for pointing out the resources relating to all this!
Might slip that slope one day with another package perhaps.

Have a good one!

Just for future reference, most maintainers are cool with this. You can usually find or create a bump request in bugzilla for it and you can usually attach the ebuild or diff there for the maintainer. Most of the teams have instructions on their project page for how they would like people to submit patches, ebuilds, etc.
