k folks...
1) "The MacOS way"
Frankly, if someone wants to do it the MacOS way in linux, then he is actually doing it his way. The beauty of linux is the ability to choose. Not evenyone wants to be a rogue, and not everyone wants to be an atomiton. I think it is a shame how limiting the desktop selection is, in fact.
Yes, I know there is KDE, Gnome, flux/black/open/box, xfce, icewm, windowmaker, imd4linux, cde, etc, etc, etc, etc. BUT they are all almost identical. Not that this is bad, but there isn't really any truly unique environment. Not that this is necessarily a bad thing... This environment has evolved over 30 years or so, and maybe there is a reason for it.
And MacOS certainly has the most eyecandy.
2) Blue icons
blue is cool. I'm red-green colour-blind, so the only colour I can see is blue. This is a common type of colour-blindness in males. Software/GUI Engineers know this.
3) light backgrounds
I agree. They suck
4) MacOS is intuitive
Only if its what you grew up on. If it is what you grew up on, then who's to tell you that something else is better? |

Well yeah, I mean.. I'm 'copying' the Mac look because Mac made it. If it were made by Zorgelflorp I'd be copying Zorgelflorps' look. I have a problem with the term 'copying' I suppose. If using a certain look or functionality is 'copying' then both KDE and Gnome have a lot to thank Microsoft for because a lot of elements of both can be traced back to Windows. Either way, its the look and feel that is attractive. I like having all my icons on one smallish bar that doesn't take up much screen space. Many people did this with panels before OS X, both in Windows and in Linux. Docks are not a new concept. The fact that the icons smoothly scale upwards in size only makes the standard dock more attractive and who doesn't want an attractive looking desktop?
As far as colors go, yeah, I'm pretty much sick of the blue and white too. They're a good contrast without being obnoxious and the original OS X color scheme was nice, but its been done to death. Thats probably the reason for all the brushed metal in OS X now. Yes, I'd like to see some original work done for Linux now that OS X isn't as new and fancy anymore. I still love my OS X style dock though. No matter what KDE style I use, that dock never looks out of place nor does it loose its functionality. If it were just a shiny toy, I'd of gotten sick of it by now. _________________ Go find a cheerleader and saw her legs off. - Nny |

This is the best OS X-like panel I have seen so far and its very customisable:
emerge superkaramba
Go to www.kde-look.org and get the tuxbar theme from the Karamba section.
Its brilliant.

Are there any non gnome or kde startbars like OSX?
starterbar looks fine, but too much gnome stuff to install too!
Perhaps fbdesk for flux could be adapted _________________ Tyan Tiger K8W, 2xOpteron 240,Powerbook5,6 15" 1.5g, Macbook Black 2g, Mac Mini 1g, Ipod P60g.

Unfortunately Superkaramba doesn't play well with other desktops than KDE. The background won't show through. You get a huge black square (the size of the maximised icons when the dock is zoomed)
That's another problem with a Mac OSX dock in Linux. The way our X server works sucks for this. Since the background is painted onto a window to allow these icons to zoom, you can't have a semi transparent dock over your windows.
I really wish someone would write a standalone dock program for linux though, inspite of all the shortcomings. I would have done it already if I could program _________________ I'm too lazy to type something here.... |

lol spoke too soon, kooldock works well in other desktops (so far)
shows the background through (rox pinboard) and can even appear over a window.
I think it's another permanent addition to my desk... _________________ I'm too lazy to type something here.... |

I don't really get why you're all so facinated by the zoom effect of the OSX dock. I turned that off on my iBook after a week or so. Why I'm missing the dock on my Linux system, is because the dock is an excellent tool for tracking and manipulating running applications. THAT is the funcionality I want from a dock clone on Linux, not some stupid resource-eating eye candy!

I agree.
The MacOS X theme is only cool in MacOS X.
When people try to copy it to anything that isn't MacOS X, it gets annoying after the first million failed attempts.

Engage is the nicest replacement Ive seen so far. However, it like all the others still has its shortcomings. It is still pre-alpha as far as I know. Additionally, it is based on the enlightenment dr17 libraries. Since I am using entrance, I have most of the libraries installed anyways.
