It's a known Firebird Thunderbird bug and if you check the Mozilla pages it's one of the things they're trying to fix for the next release (although they've said that for a few releases now). So basically what I'm saying is there isn't a way to do this. If I'm wrong I'd love to hear it

I'm using Firebird & Thunderbird from cvs, and this has been resolved, so the next releases should have it. I use gnome, and all you have to do is tell gnome to use Firebird as your preferred URL handler. The rest is magic |

CVS stands for "Concurrent Versions System", and it's used (mostly) to manage software projects. If someone is getting their sources from cvs, they are getting the lastest sources that the developers are working on. This means that you'll see newer features faster, but this also means that you'll sometimes have problems, since the code hasn't been bug tested like a release version. |

I don't know what it stands for, but it is the source code tree the developers access for the program. It allows you to get a development snapshot of applications that are not official releases. |

Fixed?!? Finally!
I'll wait for the new ebuild. Last time I tried my own compile, I failed horribly. Something to try again on a rainy day I guess. _________________ (= I smile because I have no idea what's going on =) |

That's weird because I use Firebird and thunderbird under WinXP and it works for me, I'm able to click on a web link in a e-mail in thunderbird and firebird fires up and loads the web page. _________________ Phanbox64: MSI K8N Neo2, AMD Athlon64 3500+, ATI Radeon 9800XT, Corsair TwinX1024-3200C2 1024MB SDRAM, 2 WD 74GB Raptors & 120GB SATA HD, Audigy2 ZS, Plextor PX-708A DVD-/+RW, Pioneer DVD-106S DVD-ROM, CoolerMaster WaveMaster Case |

That is because this bug is specific to Unix versions, where there is no central place for specifying default browser/mail client. I am not sure if the fix currently in CVS will work if neither Gnome nor KDE are installed. |

Damn, I was getting REALLY hopeful until I saw that. I guess I'll just wait for the ebuild if we're not sure. I was almost to the point of dling it, and compiling "the old fashioned way". _________________ Gentoo systems.

Is this issue resolved?
I have the newest version of firebird and thunderbird and the only reason I use Mozilla is that I can't launch links from Thunderbirds in Firebird
I have set preferred browsers in both gnome and KDE to thunderbird, but Thunderbird alwas says:

Failed to send command.

You need thunderbird 0.4 or later (cvs or nightly build will do) and either a cvs version of mozilla or firebird.
The release versions of mozilla and firebird do not have the patch to enable the links to work, so cvs is the only why to go currently. _________________ <!-- Insert funny comment here-->

Is there an ebuild, or do i have to do it manually? |

I think there is a firebird-cvs ebuild in portage, if not... there's definitely one on breakmygentoo.net _________________ <!-- Insert funny comment here-->

Let me tell how I solved this issue.
I emerge mozilla-firebird-0.7-r1.
It's important to use the -r1 version, since it includes the remote client patch. However launching links still did not work with MozillaFirebird -remote, even if an instance of FireBird was running. So, I put this little script script got from MozillaZine into my /home/pranyi/bin:
Code: |
export MOZILLA_HOME=/usr/lib/MozillaFirebird
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$LD_LIBRARY_PATH:$MOZILLA_HOME
export OPEN_MODE='new-tab'
# get URL to load
url=$1; [ -z $url ] && url=about:blank
# try xremote first
$MOZILLA_HOME/mozilla-xremote-client openURL\($url,$OPEN_MODE\) && exit 0
# if xremote failed, then launch the browser
exec $MOZILLA_HOME/MozillaFirebird $url
|
After that and giving execution rights to the script (let's call it /home/pranyi/bin/firebird), I added it as handler in
tools -> options -> attachments -> File Types -> Change Action
for HTML documents. |
