I'm looking to find a way other than VNC to forward the display 0.0 (The display shown when logged in interactively) when SSHing into my newly compiled machine.

I am at a bit of a level of ambiguity whether this is possible.

I have achieved running cygwin/putty combination and getting an SSH session into the gentoo box and forwarding to a different display, but if that connection is lost then the whole session is lost. I figure if i can share the console display, if i get disconnected, i can just reconnect to that display and all will be as previously.

Console display? The 'console' the text-only (or sometimes framebuffered) screen you see when Linux boots up. Do you mean the first screen on the first X server - :0.0?

If he's saying what I now think he's saying, then I agree - 'screen' is what you want. There's plenty of info around on how to get started with it.

Ok, screen will not help with X displays. If you want to remotely access the entire X 'screen' you need to use something like VNC. If you want a remote app to draw it's GUI on your X server, you can use ssh -X. Remember, the application that displays the graphics is the 'X server' and the application that produces the output is the X client (e.g. xterm).

XSession can 'remember' what you had open and reopen apps for you when you restart X. It doesn't remember application state however, so you won't get back to where you were.

There's something like screen for X called xnest but I don't think it works very well.

I have hunted quite a bit across google and it looks as though all signs point towards the only way this would work is through VNC unfortunately.

And now that i seem to understand how this whole X server and client thing works, it wouldnt make sense for an X client such as KDE be connected to two X servers (one on the local machine and one on the remote machine
