I am currently in the process of installing gentoo on a new laptop. I have followed the Amd64 handbook up to the point where you remove the installation drive and boot into gentoo on its own. At this point, the machine fails while starting up. The kernel and OpenRC both start, but as services are loading, the machine hangs for a few seconds and then reboots.
There seems to be some amount of randomness in exactly where it fails. Usually the last line that it prints is
INIT: entering runlevel: 3
But some times it fails earlier at
Bringing up network interface: lo
And sometimes it makes it farther to
Starting DHCP Client Daemon
I’m happy to provide more information if it would help.

I was able to resolve this issue by upgrading to the 5.7 kernel. I still don’t quite know what caused the issue, although since the hardware is rather new, needing to use a recent kernel is somewhat reasonable. |
