Mexico Makes Software & Hardware Modification Illegal (including Linux)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IJ3LphA-SW4
Is this for real? Anybody from Mexico, or fluent with Spanish, can confirm if this is not just a misunderstanding or fake news, please? |

Well, here's the new legislation (Ley Federal de Protección a la Propiedad Industrial) that the YouTube video is talking about:
http://www.diputados.gob.mx/LeyesBiblio/pdf/LFPPI_010720.pdf
From a cursory scan, it looks to me like it's intended to further protect intellectual property and 'industrial secrets'. I don't see why installing Linux on e.g. a Dell laptop and overwriting Windows 10 would constitute infringement of Dell and Microsoft's intellectual property rights or their 'industrial secrets'. Unless an expert in Mexican law can point to specific clauses in the new legislation that specifically prohibits that, I would think the installation and use of Linux is unaffected. _________________ Clevo W230SS: amd64, VIDEO_CARDS="intel modesetting nvidia".

This seems right from what I see as well, but am no lawyer. _________________ Pura Vida |

If referring to la "Ley Federal del Derecho de Autor", the link to that law (24 December 1996) and its various amendments up to the latest on 1 July 2020 is on the following site:
http://www.diputados.gob.mx/LeyesBiblio/ref/lfda.htm
From a cursory scan, it's about the author's rights (music, software, firmware, broadcasts, books, etc.). Again, unless an expert in Mexican law can point to specific clauses in that legislation that specifically prohibits it, I would think the installation and use of Linux is unaffected. _________________ Clevo W230SS: amd64, VIDEO_CARDS="intel modesetting nvidia".
