I finally managed to get the basics of Gentoo installed (my GRUB problem was caused by following the install guide too closely--I set root (hd0,0) because that's what the install guide said, and I thought it needed to be told the first partition on the first disk, whereas I'm on a multi-boot system, so root needed to be (hd0,4))
I sort of stumbled my way through getting KDE started (I went into /usr/X11R6/bin and used xf86config without really knowing what I was doing...so I don't have my preferred res/color depth, but I don't *know* my monitor's hsync and vsync rates, so let's not get too picky)
So...now what packages should I install next? I've got KDE and Mozilla and apache and mysql (although I haven't got serviceconf yet, unless it was installed with KDE, so I don't have those daemons running or set to run)
I don't remember much about config files, so as matters stand now, I have to log in and type "kdm" to get into KDE...where do I go to set my default runlevel to 5 so that I get a GUI login again? It's been so long since I learned that stuff that I managed to unlearn it *dies*
I'm by no means a Linux power-user, so I'm not sure what I'll need to get a basic system up and running. _________________ You're either an eagle, or an earthworm |
