I finally managed to get the basics of Gentoo installed (my GRUB problem was caused by following the install guide too closely--I set root (hd0,0) because that's what the install guide said, and I thought it needed to be told the first partition on the first disk, whereas I'm on a multi-boot system, so root needed to be (hd0,4))

I sort of stumbled my way through getting KDE started (I went into /usr/X11R6/bin and used xf86config without really knowing what I was doing...so I don't have my preferred res/color depth, but I don't *know* my monitor's hsync and vsync rates, so let's not get too picky)

So...now what packages should I install next? I've got KDE and Mozilla and apache and mysql (although I haven't got serviceconf yet, unless it was installed with KDE, so I don't have those daemons running or set to run)

I don't remember much about config files, so as matters stand now, I have to log in and type "kdm" to get into KDE...where do I go to set my default runlevel to 5 so that I get a GUI login again? It's been so long since I learned that stuff that I managed to unlearn it *dies*

I'm by no means a Linux power-user, so I'm not sure what I'll need to get a basic system up and running.

You may want to take a look at the Desktop Configuration Guide www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-x86-install.xml

It sounds like you've got most of the desktop stuff setup correctly, but the guide may help fill in some gaps for you. You may also want to read the rc-scripts guide http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/rc-scripts.xml which explains how Gentoo deals with runlevels, etc.
