Hi, I just installed Gentoo and am a linux noob. I can not get Gnome to start up correctly, it goes to the gdm the after I type in my login/pass it says it could not find the Gnome installation and goes to failsage xterm.
Any suggestions....

... have you installed Gnome like this:
Code:
emerge gnome
If you have, then have you done all the configuring mentioned in gentoo-desktop-configuration-guide(can be found from www.gentoo.org/doc)

yes, i followed the instructions step-by-step, even waited forever for them to print out on my old ass hp printer. Also, this may help, when linux is booting it goes right into the nvidia screen, then gnome, is there a way to get it to stay at the console?

to make boot stay in text-mode, type this in console:
Code:
rc-update del xdm
That will remove the xdm startup script(which starts gdm) from the boot-sequence. You can check what scripts are started during boot with:
Code:
rc-update show
Make sure you have net.lo running. It's needed for gnome to function.
