Hi,
I had Gentoo on all my laptops since 2005. Manual was very clear so it was fine for me. However, I plan to buy some extra laptop very soon and...
Official guide says about Minimal installation CD or The occasional Gentoo LiveDVD

The problem is, I have seen CD/DVD device only in my 6 years old laptop. Is there any manual for laptops without CD/DVD? Does many people use CD/DVD for installation in 2020 as this is a default option in official guide?

Hi
Just write the iso image to a USB stick.
FedoraMediaWriter does a good job at this.
Or use dd.
And boot from USB.

| I use Ubuntu ISOs dd'ed to a USB stick. Haven't wasted plastic on any distro in a long time, there's just no need unless it's something ancient with USB 1.1. |

| In some cases, mainly for exotic scenarios, you could netboot the new device. However, this is more trouble than the other methods proposed here, so I would only seriously consider it if booting from USB were not an option. This could happen if the device has insufficient USB ports to connect the boot media and all the other USB devices you want to use during the install. |

Some of my older motherboards have problems booting from USB. Everything boots from CD and drive prices are dirt cheap. Besides, you might be in the mood to play an old DVD, not available for streaming. |

If CD/ DVD is not an option, just do as people here already proposed and "burn" the image to a USB stick.
The gentoo minimal CD even allows for the image to be copied to ram when you boot it up, afaik, so even if you need that USB port to connect anything during install, you could just boot, remove the stick and plug in whatever else you need.
I assume you know how to make a bootable USB stick.

At least, the handbook doesn't tell about using an installation floppy. |
