|
|
Hey there. This question is something that I have been wondering since I had to emerge LibreOffice and noticed it is still at 6.4
I am using ~AMD64 so to my understanding I have quite up to date packages, and generally it is true. This is not the case for LibreOffice, since 7.0 came out a month ago. Oddly enough I can' t find overlays that offer it.
I assumed it just takes a bit long to update to 7, but then today I saw a release update for 6.4...
Is in there any practical practical reason for 7 not being offered, or it is just some sort of security issue? I really can live and happily use 6.4, but I am curious to know if there is any reason for this, so please, don't take this like a rant |

I'm guessing it's mainly due to the fact that the current version 6 releases are considered "stable" by upstream (or "still" as they name them now), while version 7 is "fresh" (I guess kind of like "unstable", which gets new features but also has had less testing and comes with the high possibility of new bugs).

I've downloaded the "basic" (English only) "fresh" (vs. "still" stable new version but not the daily image) AppImage of LibreOffice 7.0.1.2 to a flash drive. Looks nice. When run from terminal show no errors. 252 MB. Faster than I expected. It keeps it's separate configuration in .config/libreoffice/7.0.1 which is nice. Has been .config/libreoffice/4 forever. I've only really looked at it briefly.
Lots of release notes at: https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/ReleaseNotes/7.0 _________________ Andy Figueroa
