ooooh! i found a typo in http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml?style=printable&full=1#book_part1_chap10



splashimage=(hd0,0)/boot/grub/splash.xpm.gz

should be

splashimage=(hd0,0)/grub/splash.xpm.gz



agreed?

The stage tarball creates a symlink in /boot called boot that points to . (i.e. boot->.)
So it doesn't matter which way you do it.
Also, if the user doesn't choose to use a seperate boot partition, then you have to have the (hd0,0)/boot in there...
