I've installed Gentoo and try to config addtional stuff. I'm trying to configure SANE to detect my EPSON L4160 multifuncional printer and scanner.

Printer part was running Ok with CUPS, but I can't configure scanner part with SANE. I've followed instructions of https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/SANE , but it still wasn't working. By the way, it's a network scanner.

Code:
scanimage -L

No scanners were identified. If you were expecting something different,
check that the scanner is plugged in, turned on and detected by the
sane-find-scanner tool (if appropriate). Please read the documentation
which came with this software (README, FAQ, manpages).

I tried to run #sane-find-scanner, I got:

Code:
# sane-find-scanner will now attempt to detect your scanner. If the
  # result is different from what you expected, first make sure your
  # scanner is powered up and properly connected to your computer.

  # No SCSI scanners found. If you expected something different, make sure that
  # you have loaded a kernel SCSI driver for your SCSI adapter.

found USB scanner (vendor=0x0bda [Generic], product=0x0129 [USB2.0-CRW]) at libusb:001:003
  # Your USB scanner was (probably) detected. It may or may not be supported by
  # SANE. Try scanimage -L and read the backend's manpage.

  # Not checking for parallel port scanners.

  # Most Scanners connected to the parallel port or other proprietary ports
  # can't be detected by this program.

Any suggestions to solve this? thanks

nazgulba,

Poking about on the Epson website you appear to need Image Scan Version 2.

Thats packaged for Gentoo as media-gfx/iscan.

You probably need media-gfx/iscan-data too if media-gfx/iscan does not pull it in.
Then there are lots of plugins for various scanners.

media-gfx/iscan-plugin-network-nt looks interesting too.

I have an HP all in one, so I can't test any of this.

Post back with what works, for others that come after you.
Post back with what doesn't work too and we can try to poke at it some more.

I've emerged media-gfx/iscan-data and tried to open Xsane, but no device was detected.

I tried to emerge media-gfx/iscan-plugin-network-nt, but packages are MASKED.

!!! All ebuilds that could satisfy "media-gfx/iscan-plugin-network-nt" have been masked.
!!! One of the following masked packages is required to complete your request:
- media-gfx/iscan-plugin-network-nt-1.1.3::gentoo (masked by: ~amd64 keyword)
- media-gfx/iscan-plugin-network-nt-1.1.2.1::gentoo (masked by: missing keyword)

For more information, see the MASKED PACKAGES section in the emerge
man page or refer to the Gentoo Handbook.

I try to unmask by /etc/portage/package.unmask but I can't emerge it.

Add the package to /etc/portage/package.accept_keywords.

media-gfx/iscan-plugin-gt-f500
media-gfx/iscan-plugin-gt-f720
media-gfx/iscan-plugin-gt-x770
media-gfx/iscan-plugin-gt-x820
media-gfx/iscan-plugin-perfection-v370
media-gfx/iscan-plugin-network-nt

I saw some different linux packages for epson scanner. How can I compile one of the buitlis packages to Gentoo Linux? What's the alternatives to use it:

    try to use rpm packeges

    get the source code from site and compile it Gentoo

But I would lik to know how to do it. Actually I didin't.

I'm trying to...

But at first instruction I got stuck.

Code:
~/epsonscan2-6.6.2.0-1 $ ./install-deps
install-deps: Unsupported package management system

I really don't know how to compile it. This are instructions from Epson web page.

Code:
5.1.4. Install from source file

It is possible to install Epson Scan 2 from the source file.
Please refer to the following procedure for build with cmake.

* All of the following procedures are performed on the command line.
Unzip the source package and move it to the source directory.
$ cd epsonscan2-x.x.x.x-x
Install the required packages.
Packages required for building Epson Scan 2 are automatically
installed by executing the install-deps script in the source directory
(Please connect to the network when running the script).

$ ./install-deps
Run cmake
$ cmake .
The following option can be specified.
Environment variable name   Setting contents
EPSON_INSTALL_ROOT   Specify installation location (full path)
BUILD_TYPE   Specify Release or Debug

Run make
$ make
Run make install
$ sudo make install
Installation complete

Study the install-deps script. See what the dependencies are. Use portage to see if the dependencies are installed, and if not, install them using portage.

Then, proceed with make.

Or, just skip ahead and run make. If it fails, it may give you some clues as to why it failed.

Disclaimer: Installing out-of-tree software may be harmful to your system. Proceed slowly. You will learn to hate Epson before it's over. I have a love-hate relationship with my Epson Perfection V500 Photo scanner. It's been a pain to keep it working over the last dozen years.

nazgulba,

Poke about in the CVS attic and find an ebuild you like.
Make yourself a personal overlay and have gentoo do the hard work.

Be warned, old software wants old dependencies and these old dependencies may not keep other packages already installed on your system happy.

Ask here for missing source files. They may not be easy to find.
