I'm relatively new to Linux, so please excuse me if this post is somewhat vague.

When I press the power button, this used to shutdown the system, but now it doesn't, even though pressing it is still recognized in some other cases. For example, when I suspend the system then press the power button, it still wakes the system as expected. I think this started to happen after a world update, but then I don't have anything that directly links the two except for some posts in the forums about the new kernel breaking suspend and the likes in their laptop.

Where can I start tweaking/exploring for changing this behavior?

Try your DE's Power Settings.

Very vague, yes.

When it worked, why did it work? Are you using acpid to handle this event? Do you use systemd or openrc for your init system?

That would be the responsibility of the firmware, not Linux. You might be able to break that if you tried hard enough.

That's very possible. What specifically did you change in that world update?

I use openrc. I don't know what handles these events, but I'm definitely not using acpid.

I'll report back when I figure this out, I dont know how to check update history with portage yet, and I couldn't remember exactly what I updated.

This is the emerge.log, beginning from around the time the power button began to break: http://sprunge.us/6ywHz0

The answer was so obvious all along...

For whatever reason, I didn't have acpid in my system. Sorry! I don't really remember uninstalling acpid, so that's weird. But I should be fine now.
