it seems that the udp packets generated by the server despite being a physical machine have the wrong checksum!

I have the same problem with dhcp-4.4.2-r3. It worked fine until it suddenly broke at night. The server was receiving DHCPREQUESTs (and replying with DHCPACK) one minute and one minute later, only DHCPDISCOVERs and DHCPOFFERs.
Tcpdump and wireshark revealed that packets produced by dhcpd have wrong checksums in IP header. Same wrong chcksum value on both the client and server.
Recompiled dhcp with DEBUG_CHECKSUM enabed in includes/site.h only to find that it works... Looks like a compiler bug (gcc-10.2.0-r5)? |

Seems that -O3 with gcc-10.2.0-r5 triggers the bug. Changed CFLAGS to -O2, recompiled dhcp and it works.
One mystery remains: why did it work with -O3 until now? |

-O3 is widely documented to enable optimizations that can break programs which do not strictly conform to the C standard. Perhaps you upgraded to a version which relies on some bit of non-conforming behavior. Your post is a bit unclear. Do you mean that a dhcp daemon that was working suddenly ceased working, without upgrading or even restarting the once-working process? |

It seemed so but looks like I misread the logs. It died the day before but nobody noticed (as clients having valid lease still worked).

dhcpd was restarted two times because of upgrade:

The first restart was because of glibc upgrade (glibc-2.32-r7 -> glibc-2.33).
The second one was because dhcpd itself was rebuilt.
Unfortunately, sysklogd was restarted on 11:45:45 and this probably killed logging from dhcpd until the second dhcpd restart.
Looks like glibc broke it. |

If glibc broke it, why did rebuilding dhcpcd with a lesser optimization option fix it?
If you want to pursue this, you could try to isolate what part of dhcpcd is compiled to the bad version under -O3. Once the affected code is identified, it can be analyzed to fix the problem. |
