|
After a long time of not updating the kernel, I finally got around to doing this. Unfortunately, when I start a desktop session, the display is messed up. There are sets of rectangles that appear to be in the wrong place on the screen.
See image:
https://ibb.co/SfjMXpV
This only happens with 5.4.72. It is independent of the user (I created a new user to test this).
I am running an AMD CPU with onboard graphics:

I haven't got any responses to this in the Kernel and Hardware forum, so I was wondering if a Desktop expert might be able to shed some light on the problem. The issue only affects desktop logins, so perhaps this is a more appropriate forum?
Original post is here:

Update:
My searching reveals this bug report, which looks similar:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-mate/+bug/1877762
But no resolution of the issue. |

Hi
please try if it works with
Code: |
emerge -av gentoo-kernel-bin-5.4.72
|
If it works my advice to you stick with that.
Albeit a bit large it is professionally configured and should work nicely. _________________

Thank you for your suggestion, which I have tried. Unfortunately, it did not improve the display.
I did find someone else reporting what may be the same problem on an Ubuntu MATE system, which might suggest that the problem really lies in MATE:

Mate stores those locations in , I believe, gvfs, on a per user basis. Typically, for a new user or other change, Mate will arrange the icons in a rectangular pattern on the left side of the screen. Upper left if the number of icons is that small.
Are you saying that when running on the same machine with the same user, you get that rectangular pattern with 5.4.72 and not with something else with the same kernel configuration?
Have you tried 5.4.66?
As a test, arrange them manually in circke. Does this pattern survive reboot? |

Here is what mgnut's desktop looks like normally:
https://ibb.co/g7T1HBB
Note that the icon's are not moving: they are being displayed wrongly.
'mgnut' is a brand new user that was created with an empty home directory, just to show the problem. The problem occurs for both this new login and my normal login. Obviously, they have very different displays.
The problem does not occur when booted into 4.19.82. This is 100% reproducible on my system. As I noted above, it occurs with both the kernel that I built and with the 'gentoo-kernel-bin' version of 5.4.72. |

So you can reboot into 4.19.82 and the icon placement changes? And changes again if you boot back to 5.4.72?
Not just the first time, but reproducibly.? I'm just rying to clarify the boundaries of the problem.
EDIT:
OK, there are extra "ghost" icons and the bottom panel is shifted right. Like some kind of delay is writing the raster.
Sounds like videocard support problem. |

Perhaps, yes.
Update: more searching suggests that it's a problem with the Xorg amdgpu driver:

Yes, this appears to be the same bug. Going into that mode now produces the same results as yours with corrupted blocks and offsets rather than the clean tearing of the original. Glad I'm not going nuts! |

Try to change the resolution of your output display.
If the problem persists, then I'd mask the kernel version causing the issue and compile the last one which worked fine. _________________ ..: Zucca :..

The problem has gone away, but I wonder if this is due to swapping out the 4x3 display for a 16x10 display. |

Update: the problem has gone away. I am not sure if this is due to updates to X or mesa or some other graphical component, but I also swapped out my monitor from an old 4x3 monitor to a newer 16x10 monitor. |

Please don't cross post, thanks.
