Hi there,
Maybe 8 years ago I bought a ZyXel NSA 325 (arm5tel) and formatted one disk with xfs. Reading worked, but writing produced a lot of corruptions on that disk (ordinary HDD, no SSD). I reformatted this disk with Ext4 and got rid of the problems.
At work we are using xfs as standard file system in our server environment on x86. XFS is the recommend file system by Redhat.
Now I'm installing a Helios64 ARM NAS. And i wonder if XFS is now safe to use in production environment on ARM.
What would you suggest? |

That's an arm64 system. Do you intend to run arm (32 bit) or arm64 on it?
I tried to keyword gparted with USE=xfs on arm64 yesterday but some of the XFS support bits and pieces won't build on arm64. See bug #747181
Arm (32 bit) will be different.

Yes, it's an ARM64 system and installation.
Maybe it's better to stay with ext4. Seems to be more stable to me. |

RedHat is going to switch to btrfs, and btrfs works perfectly on all my aarch64 systems

Unless I'm missing some news, them releasing Fedora 33 last month with btrfs as default (on workstation edition only!) after having dropped btrfs on RHEL8 entirely, it sounds more like testing the water rather than intending to switch.
SLES on the other hand, has been using btrfs for a while now. But for root partition only, additional partitions default to XFS afaik.
I think XFS matured quite a bit in recent years considering its adoption in enterprise, and I don't see why it wouldn't work on Arm64 considering there are Arm64 servers now. But if in doubt, I'd say you can't go wrong with ext4. No CoW (reflinks) in ext4 though  |
