|
|
I've been using Linux for about 3 years now and when Gentoo 1.2 came out, I tried it and fell in love with the concept of building your own system. Since I have DSL and use PPPOE, i had to use stage 3 and I can't complain but I keep wondering why they can't include PPPOE in stage 1.
Now I know this subject has been mentioned before but I haven't heard anyone mention anything about their plans for 1.4. Surely I am not the only one hoping to get PPPOE support during installation of gentoo. |

why not simply include:
[ebuild N ] net-dialup/ppp-2.4.1-r10 to /
[ebuild N ] net-dialup/rp-pppoe-3.4 to /
and a much larger selection of network modules(ie. including usb as in the case of my pegasus-based usb ethernet connection for my DSL modem......)
rp-pppoe rocks, I'm sold, after having fought with dial-up software for isdn and then DSL -this is simply the best I have seen..... |

It is quite simple to add dsl to stage1 when you take
five minutes of care to your /etc/ppp/options file.
I recommend checking out a pppd from the cvs server, since I have no experience with the gentoo ppp package. The CVS HEAD of ppp includes a rp-pppoe.so plugin for pppd that can be loaded by default. I can send short ppp sample config files to anyone who request that by e-mail.
I think the complete pppd fits on a floppy disk, but I prefer to take it from another hardisk partition.
I was also used to use the rp-pppoe adls-start things, but after looking up the big script files I throw anything away and simply copied their configuration from the adsl-connect script into options, that's much faster, more reliable and easier to maintain.
