(solved) Asrock Radeon 6800 xt Taichi, boots to black screen

I had a r9 390 setup to work with amdgpu.

Systems is ~amd64

Everything's up to date.

Kernel 5.9.15

Same with

Kernel 5.10.3-gentoo

Init is openrc.

Everything works until I get to the point booting where the screen first blinks then instead of seeing more text monitor gets no signal, and that's that.

No error messages no nothing that I can see just black screen,

Doesn't work if I append nox,

I can boot to a command line if I use nomodeset

I'm out of ideas.

EDIT:

ok i went into kernel and disabled all the framebuffer. now the machine will boot to sddm, but i see no framebuffer, no VT's etc. if i try to switch to a VT then it just doesnt display anything and the monitor turns off.

but everything works beautifully in X,

just no fb now

i went back to the kernel settings and turned on framebutter support and efi fb and simple fb and still no fb not sure.

I think one thing I remember having to enable for RX 5700 XT, is 'CONFIG_DRM_FBDEV_EMULATION'.

I also have 'CONFIG_FB_SIMPLE' and 'CONFIG_FB_VESA' to name a couple of others, but I really forget the minimal requirements here (and don't know if the 6800 might require something else).
