I have got vmware installed but I can't get it to install a guest os. I am running kernel 2.6.0-test11 if that matters. I got it to start the guest os once but it said no boot floppy or cd found pleade insert and restart and when I closed it down and now reopen it it won't even start the guest os. |

This is just a guess because you didn't explain what you meant by "it won't even start the guest os" (i.e. what you did exactly, what the program did exactly)...
Try this,
Code: | modprobe vmmon
modprobe vmnet
vmware
|
Vmware needs its modules loaded before it will work.
This assumes that you ran vmware-config.pl after installing, and that you have entered your key (look under the help menu). |

I also have some problems with VMWare. I have installed latest version and I am running love2 kernel.
When I run vmware-config.pl with no networking and no host only networking then the virtual machine starts fine otherwise I get an error saying that I need to run the config and the machine doesn't start.
I simply need to be able to transfer files to the machine. Is there a way to do this with my current config? |

yo blmartin,
i think u might try to press F2 during startup so u can change ur bios (vmware has some bios too!) so u change it too ur hdisk. than it boots from ur hdisk instead of ur cdrom or floppy.
hope that would help

I have got somewhat the same problem as blmartin.
I am evaluating VMWare 4.0.5.6030 under a 2.6.1rc1 kernel. Installs and compiles modules OK. I can install a guest OS by booting a floppy disk or with a virtual CD-ROM drive linked to an ISO file.
But I can't boot from (or access later) a virtual CD-ROM drive linked to the physical CD-ROM drive (/dev/cdrom or /dev/cdroms/cdrom0). I modified the boot order in VMWare BIOS with no success. Maybe it's a problem related to the 2.6 kernel, since I don't have such problems when I try VMware under a 2.4.x kernel. Any idea ? Any success report using CD-ROM drives with VMWare and a 2.6 kernel ?
Another (probably unrelated) problem is that when I start a virtual machine sometimes (1/4 times) it just stops (comes back to "Stopped" status) with a "Panic loop" message in the console.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hello Koon,
I've got the same problem like you.
I'm using the new 2.6.1 kernel and the newest version of vmware - but no success in using an "physical" cdrom within vmware.
Does somebody already solved that problem ?
Greetings and thanks in advance.

Hmm, I'm using the latest (non-beta) vmware and I can boot/read cds fine on my system with 2.6.1-love5. I have installed it using a newer set of patches for 2.6 compatibility than are used in the portage ebuild though (along with a small hack to get it to play with the reiserfs4 kernel patches). I don't know if that's the difference though....try it if you want, by changing "vmware-any-any-update45" at the start of the ebuild to "vmware-any-any-update48". Also, I have 'legacy emulation' turned on, I think turning it off causes problems so maybe you can try that too.
Cheers,
James |

To get the network etc working, you should just be able to run /etc/init.d/vmware start. |

Hi all
I'm using vmware for a pretty long time now, and also visited their website a lot. This is what I found out:
2.4.x kernels
The vm-modules shouldn't have any problems with installing and running.
NOTE: that excludes the latest gentoo-sources-r5, since you have to patch a file in vmmon.tar, but that's for another thread
2.6.x kernels
Vm-module support is highly experimental! Most of the time, the modules don't compile right, and when it does, it's still a question to whether they actually run right.
Vmware is highly depending on the vm-modules. If anything goes wrong there, vmware will start acting really funky (which is why I prefer VirtualPC on Windows-platforms).
I haven't heard about an update of vmware that fixes all these problems, so I guess we have to wait until v5 before 2.6.x kernels are officially supported. _________________ Registered linux user #341804

Turning on or off legacy emulation depends on whether or not you're using SCSI-emulation for your IDE-CD-drives.
If you use ide-scsi, you can turn off legacy emulation. If you don't, legacy emulation must be turned on or otherwise vmware won't work correctly.
Note: this is exactly what the alert box says, when you haven't installed ide-scsi for a particular IDE-CDROM-drive. _________________ Registered linux user #341804

I got vmware to install windows 2000 pro but I still have 1 problem, it takes like 2 minutes before actually start booting windows 2000, it seems like vmware crashed but the system continues with the cdp at 0 - 5% ofload so its like vmware is just sitting there and after the long time it just starts without problems except something about /dev/rtc _________________ "What doesn't kill you make you stronger" |

This is the problem I'm running into ATM. Does anyone have a fix for this? What files do I need to patch? etc. etc.
Cheers,

Just a follow up post to the thread concerning kernel 2.6 and VMWare. I've installed VMWare 4.5.1 (using emerge) on my system with Kernel 2.6.3 and it runs perfectly. Guess they've worked out the bugs. |

Thought you might wanna know that it works for me now.
I'm running 2.6.5-mm-r1 sources and VMware 4.5.1.
