Sorry if this is in the wrong forum ...

Anyway, Im thinking of subscribing to comp.lang.python and from perusing the archives it gets quite a bit of activity so I'm gonna use dedicated news software to read the posts.
Trouble is I've never used a news group reader before so I was wondering what client software you folks would recommend (Ive always just used the news reader side of mail clients).
I dont care if it's GUI or not, but I'd prefer not to have to use any KDE/Gnome specific apps such as knode etc.

Anyway, thanks in advance.

I use Pan as my newsreader its standalone, has a nice GUI, and easy to configure. It's also quite good for binary groups as well.

pan if you need good binary downloading capabilities
knode is also quite good.

since you don't want any KDE/GNOME dependencies, try Mozilla's Mail and News client or Thunderbird

Don't forget the power of Emacs and GNUS.

Funnily enough I emerged sylpheed last night but I havent tried it yet.
It sounds pretty good tho, I may use that or GNUMail as my main email client.

Pan is very good and is not Gnome based (but uses the GTK+2 widget set like GNome.), Works also under Windows.

I use Forte Agent, since it's what I'm used to (not to mention, it is also probably the most popular newsreader besides google groups). It runs perfectly under the latest wine-20031118 :)

Mozilla Mail/News is pretty nice and easy to use. I used to use it one windows and it was fine for my needs.

Pan is also nice, and I think it does binaries.

If you already know Emacs than try GNU's. If you don't know Emacs expect a moutainous learning curve, but in the end it's a great client because it's CLI, and it's incredibly customizable, and can do mail as well. A lot of non-Emacs users use SLRN CLI newsreader.

Since your only trying to subscribe to one newsgroup, I would recommend against GNU's and just going with Mozilla mail/news or thunderbird now that I think of that client. Be warned though: updating 1000+ threads in X will take longer to scroll and refresh than a CLI, and you won't have to worry about X crashes and such.

If you like to use Forte Agent under Windows (I did too in my Windows times), you should try pan, as it seems to be a clone of Forte Agent.

bye,
