Like installing Windows XP, you put the installation CD in your drive, and when setup starts you can partition your harddrive, format and install the OS, all from the CD.

You are probably thinking of other Linux distributions (RedHat, Mandrake, SuSE, etc) that have a point-n-click installer pretty much like Windows.

Gentoo is different. With Gentoo, you do the installation (and learn a whole lot in the process). The best part is you decide what goes into your OS installation, and how it is configured.

Oh, I almost forgot.
Welcome to Gentoo :D

And if there will be a graphical, point-n-click installer which works the Gentoo-way of being able to choose what you want and what not, it really would be annoying because of thousands of options to choose from.

Gentoo isn't a beginners distro - maybe you should try another, newbie-friendly one, like RedHat (Fedora) or SuSE and after some work with it, you still can switch to Gentoo. I think it is the better way - so you can find out, if Linux is the right OS for you and don't have to fight through unknown territory (Gentoo-install...).

And after you switched, you appreciate Gentoos advantages ;-)

Fedora ISOs:

Mandrake ISOs:

This thread is over a year old. You might want to check the dates of the threads you read to make sure what is being discussed is still relevant.
