I am emerging kde-3.1.4 and when emerging gtkmm the system hardlocks. I am using i686 for my cpu. I have noticed this problem with several other ebuilds (libquicktime). I was able to emerge gnome with any problem.

Am I doing something wrong?

any help would be appreciated

I am using 2.6-test11

However xfree compiled without any problem. When it gets to gtkmm, then it hardlocks.

the question is: are you running emerge in grafical einvironment or from the console ?

From what ive heard xfree is hardlocking whith 2.6 kernels not emerging xfree.

The graphical environment is running. But as I recall it happened without it running as well (I think).

What I just did was scale back my compile flags to "-march=i686" This implies -02. Notice that I am not using the "-pipe" option. I guess I was a little too aggressive.

Not so fast ......

One package compiled OK that was not working before, but gtkmm failed. Xfree is already installed and running. When I say haddlock I mean that I can not ssh in or anything else.
