I have gentoo installed and now im working on installing all packages all at the same time. Like both kde,gnome,xine,p2p software, etc. I choose gentoo so i wouldnt have to use unstable redhat and download all the cool software to play mp3 and watch avi,mpegs,etc.. Also playing quake3(urban terror).
By doin this i do these commands I thought i wouldnt have to mess with installing anything else because this will install all the cool software:
mount /mnt/cdrom
PKGDIR="/mnt/cdrom/packages" emerge /mnt/cdrom/packages/ALL/*
That should install all packages gentoo offer from cd right?
well it started ask something from sourceforge.net than it aborted!
The whole point of my installing is coming all from a cd without any use of the internet.
So all i want is to know how to install all the software from cd 2 without worrying about the dependcies and have kde,gnome, xine, etc and all the cool software installed.
I used redhat for a week and i learned very fast on installing from cvs working with grub and all the x86 configuring for keybaord,mouse, monitor, and my nvidia gfx card.
K, now if there a way to install all the software what do i do next? Do i have to config my xfree86 config file to boot startx? I thought maybe when i install all packages from cd 2 i could startx and than it detects settings for x to run than i could go from there getting my sound and video to work properly and quake 3 installed.
if someone be nice to give me a step by step instructions on what i can do for my wanted needs i would greatly appreciate. |

Just look in the /mnt/cdrom/packages directory and see what packages are available, then emerge all of them at once, and use the -k flag(for binary packages):
Code: | mount /mnt/cdrom
ls /mnt/cdrom/packages
PKGDIR=/mnt/cdrom/packages emerge -k package1 package2 package3 ... |

Installing everything from CD 2 will only give you a small fraction of what is available in the portage tree. The GRP packages are mainly to save compile time for a few of the larger packages that people frequently install (like XFree, KDE, Gnome, OpenOffice, etc)
Most of the cool software you are looking for is not on the GRP CDs, but is in portage. |

emerge sync("emerge rsync" is the same) will update all the information about the packages available in portage. You should go this every now and then. |
