Can't login after desktop closed for inactivity

I an new to Gentoo and maybe over my head but did manage to get a system up and running. When the system logs me out for inactitity, I can't just enter my password and log back in. The system tells me the password is incorrect. The screen shows my user name but doesn't accept my password. I did find a work around, if I click to "switch user" the screen refreshs and changes to the sky blue inital login also with my user name and now accepts my password and logs me in. Intestingly, if I log myself out I can log back in by just entering my password.

My setup KDE-plasma desktop meta. I am using OpenRC with xdm and sddm display manager as in the sddm wiki.

I looked into the logs and clipped part of the /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old log. I'm not sure how to post the whole log but if needed I'll try with some guidance.
