Is there any reason for running apmd on s desktop (non-laptop) computer?
APM support in kernel seems to be enough to power down on shutdown -h, console blanking also work without apmd running.
So is there any benefit (lower power consuption etc.) of apmd for my desktop that is on 24/7? |

Anybody knows this?
I have been running apmd for about 2 weeks now, but did not notice any benefit. I guess I will disable it. |

I used to use APM and apmd on my desktop machine and it was wonderful while it worked. I had it configured so that when I pressed the sleep key (one of the extra 'multimedia' keys), the PC would go into suspended mode, stop the hard disk, and turn off the fans. When I pressed it again, it would wake up. Waking up in approx 1 second certainly beats booting from cold. It changed the way I used the internet. Suddenly, no query was too small to be worth trying as I wouldn't have to wait at all for the machine to boot. apmd was involved in spinning down the hard disk, as that wouldn't happen automatically.
Unfortunately, this little scheme stopped working when I upgraded to xfree 4.3.x and hasn't worked since. I miss it badly. |
