A good hostname for a gentoo reinstall?

Hi,

I'm looking to reinstall Gentoo tomorrow and don't want to use the "generic" gentoo hostname for my machine.


Any idea's as to what I could name my machine when reinstalling tomorrow?

Our work VAX cluster hosts were named after nuts. The first was Hazel ... the last was 2 BA :)

Character (or place) name from your favorite book, movie or song/band is always good idea.

Dr. Strangelove is one of my favorite movies and for more than 10 years I name all of my active machines using the last name of one of the characters.

You could create a cronjob which will surprise you every day with random dictionary word set as hostname. Imagine, you wake up and login screen tells you you are about to log into maze, or, god forbid windows!

I base hostnames on the manufacturer and/or model of the machine. For example, my Clevo W230SS laptop's hostname is 'clevow230ss'. (In the unlikely event I were to have two or more computers of the same model, I would add a suffix.) The device is therefore obvious to me when I'm looking in log files, copied terminal output, and so on.

You can change it every day if you so wish...
Pick anything that is agreeable to you both for hostname and fully qualified domain name if you are just going to use it in your lan.

Thematic hostnames are a time-honored tradition in the industry...at least until network and/or bureaucratic growth imposes the adoption of hostnames derived from such banalities as physical location or business purpose. Draw names from whatever strikes your fancy.

Some ideas that have enjoyed varying degrees of popularity over the years:

• Characters, place names, etc., from beloved fantasy/science fiction works (e.g., frodo, erebor, picard, seldon, heywood, etc.)
  
• Other literary characters (sherlock, watson, athos, porthos, aramis, ...)
  
• Vessels, both fictional and historic (bounty, potemkin, bismarck, pequod, ...)
  
• Geographic features and/or place names (hillock, butte, hoodoo, arroyo, estuary, ...)
  
• Chemical elements and compounds (ethane, propane, osmium, iridium, ...)
  
• Astronomical phenomena and celestial bodies (nova, nebula, quasar, comet, ...)
  
• Names from Greco-Roman or other mythologies (zeus, jupiter, athena, hera, ...)

If you're an rsync user, you might have noticed that Gentoo's infrastructure team is fond of birds. You get the idea--the possibilities are limited only by your creativity (and the 63-character limit).

Over the years, I've worked in or with organizations that have used most of the above themes and more. (I recall one that elevated "ferrari" to the pantheon of Greco-Roman deities for no discernible reason...go figure.) Machines (real and virtual) in my home network are named for mountain peaks, sometimes with a twist to imply purpose (such as an old laptop named ranger or a defunct Windows VM named wigwam).

Of course, no one's going to judge you if you fall back on something mundane or ironic like "dellbox" or "craptop", either.

Neddy, that's an excellent corpus. Should probably pipe it through tr or sed, though, to constrain names to the legal character set.
