Is there a proper way to do this? A normal emerge seems to indicate a slot conflict then wishes to install some older version of glibc.
Do I have to uninstall the current version? If I do that will I lose any information on my existing VMs?
Are there pointers I need to have to do this properly? Is there an order?
Specific instructions would be helpful, most of the guides on this sort of thing are either wrong or incomplete.
Thanks _________________ I remain me. |

lefebvrem,
Gentoo is do-it-yourself Linux, all installs are unique. Therefore we cannot tell what went wrong unless you provide at least basic information to start with. This would be the output of 'emerge --info' and the output of failed emerge command. _________________ My Gentoo installation notes.

Downgrading glibc is not supported, and will almost certainly abort the attempt before anything is changed. As Jaglover says, we need to see the output to make an informed answer. Regarding your existing VMs: uninstalling VirtualBox will remove your ability to run them, but should not delete the underlying machines, since those files are not managed by Portage. Once you reinstalled a compatible VirtualBox, you would regain the ability to run those machines. On principle, I would suggest not having the machines currently running when you remove or upgrade VirtualBox. |

Thanks, this is helpful information, I just didn't understand why Gentoo wouldn't just update virtualbox the way it does other packages but if I can safely uninstall the current version and just install the new version then that is a perfectly OK solution. I can see why there would be conflicts (well, except I'd probably use static linking to get around such issues) like that during an upgrade.
So long as I have a solution, I'd rather not try to untangle yet another which shared library set is which issue with Gentoo, as that is really not much fun and usually ends up taking too long. I also didn't want to hand compile myself, because that is also no fun and wastes a lot of time. _________________ I remain me. |
