I have been running gentoo for a few months now, and have been through the install process a few times. My most recent attempt was the first with 1.2. The actual install goes perfectly, but i cannot emerge xfree. i have tried all of the ebuilds & tried it with diffent flags. The current flags are -o3 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer. I am using the same USE as i have used previously (think it is -kde -gnome -arts -nls -3dnow oss mozilla dvd acl). But no matter what i do, i get the same error:
Code: |
mkdir -p /var/tmp/portage/xfree-4.2.0-r12/image//etc/X11
cp: 'XftConfig' : Argument list too long
make[3]: *** [Install] error 1

make[2]: *** [Install] error 2
make[2]: Leaving directory '/var/tmp/portage/xfree-4.2.0-r12/work/xc/lib'
make[1]: *** [Install] error 2

it's not your optimizing flags that cause it. it's an makefile error not a compile error |

I never had this problem when using gcc-2.95 but have it happen when compiling with gcc-3.1.
My CFLAGS="-march=athlon-tbird -O3 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer".
I have removed the "-fomit-frame-pointer" and will retry tonight. I don't imagine that'll make any difference though.
So, I have no idea how to fix it, but if you're using gcc-3.1, you may want to compile with gcc-2.95.
If anyone has insight into how a I can get throught the compile using gcc-3.1, I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks gang!

Did anyone find a workaround for this??? I have a Duron processor with the exact same error message compiling xfree. I've tried 5 times to compile to no avail. |
