PostPosted: Fri Jul 23, 2021 6:17 pm    Post subject: [SOLVED] Dwarf Fortress fails to launch Reply with quote

Hi,
I want to try out a game called Dwarf Fortress but it fails to launch on my system.
I've downloaded the 0.47.05 release from their website and i'm prompted with this when trying to launch the binary:
Code:
$ ./df
./libs/Dwarf_Fortress: /home/irets/Games/df_linux/libs/libstdc++.so.6: version `CXXABI_1.3.8' not found (required by /usr/lib64/libGLU.so.1)
./libs/Dwarf_Fortress: /home/irets/Games/df_linux/libs/libstdc++.so.6: version `CXXABI_1.3.9' not found (required by /usr/lib64/libGLU.so.1)

Am I missing a library? Or have I forgotten to rebuild a specific package in some past system upgrade?
Any help with this issue is appreciated.

Output of emerge --info:

It looks like the game bundled a private copy of the C++ standard library, and the one they shipped is not suitable for use on your system, because it lacks functionality required by your system libraries. The ebuild in Portage is for a slightly older version of Dwarf Fortress, but probably handles this correctly. I see a version bump bug (games-roguelike/dwarf-fortress-0.47.04 version bump) that would get you closer to current, and might be adaptable to work for the current version.

How would I go about doing this?
I'm not 100% sure how to use the bug report site to assist me in this issue.

Am I able to get the 0.47.04 version through portage by creating /etc/portage/patches/games-roguelike/dwarf-fortress/ and placing a file there with the contents of this post, and then proceeding to run
Code:
emerge --ask --verbose games-roguelike/dwarf-fortress
?
This is very new to me.

EDIT:
After some reading, I think I need to merge the diffs of this post with the contents of /var/db/repos/gentoo/games-roguelike/dwarf-fortress/dwarf-fortress-0.44.12.ebuild and then place the updated ebuild to my localrepo, isn't that right?

The libstdc++ bundled with Dwarf Fortress is no good for contemporary Gentoo, but I have had success running the game by removing those bundled library files (libstdc++.so.6 and libgcc_s.so.1 under libs), causing libstdc++ from my GCC install to be used instead. I think you also need SDL installed.

Use the latest Linux version from Bay 12 Games, currently 0.47.05.

trilithium,
It seems that deleting libstdc++.so.6 was enough.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

Marking the thread as solved.

Put the ebuild in a local overlay, possibly renamed to pick the version you want instead of the version shown in the bug.

No, because /etc/portage/patches is a mechanism for patching upstream's source. You cannot patch an ebuild like that. You can only supersede it with an overlay.

That sounds right.
