I was installing gentoo on another drive(hda) from inside my current system. I had everything configured and had to restart. I had installed grub and set it up in accordance w/ the install guide. When i restart i now can't boot with my primary drive(hdb). I get grub from my new install, even if it is lower in the boot order. If i don't have hda in the boot order at all i get a disk boot error. What can i do to make my old system bootable again? i mounted hdb1 (boot partition for main system) under the new sys, ran
Code:

grub> root (hd1,0)
grub> setup (hd1)

but have the same problem.

Did the boot partition on hdb lose its bootable flag?

oops...i spoke too soon.
I replaced the bootable flag w/ fdisk, but it still isn't booting.
I mounted hdb1 and everything appears correct.

Update:
I booted w/ the install cd and ran grub
when i root(hd1,0) it said partition type is fat when it is ext2. however fdisk says the disk is type linux. does this mean anything. It still appears as bootable.

AFAIK grub/lilo can't install themselves on anything other than hda1. Install grub/lilo to your MBR on hda, install grub/lilo on a boot floppy, switch the hard-disks around, or... well... that's it really. The fact that it ever *did* work is somewhat confusing.. was hda always there? Was it partitioned? Cuz.. it shouldn't have worked... at least, according to my understanding of lilo and grub. Was grub always set up on hdb? I don't think I really understand how your system is set up then and now...

I made hdb hda and hda hdb and it works now. The problem was that before i did all this hda was unused or so i thought and i guess that caused the trouble.

However after i restart it now won't load driver modules. It loads the netcard module, but failes on the rest.

when i modprobe another driver i get unrecognized symbol errors. How can i fix this? I have rebuilt the kernel several times.

google told me to install kernel headers. Thets not an option so i installed linux headers which didn't create a autoconf.h. I copied it from my laptop and buit. I got unresolved symbol errors. i made mrprpper and autoconf.h is gone again.
