Hi all,
About a year ago, I finally got around to putting Gentoo on this G4 12" (Powerbook6,2) I've had for a while. After some battles mostly related to cross-compiling, it was a success.
Then it went on the shelf.
Now I want to use it, but am encountering a problem- the display turns itself off after around a minute, and does not come back on. It's still running as I can connect to it over SSH, but the display is totally dark.
The machine boots to console. X is not even installed.
This wasn't happening before as I did boot it on its' own, do an 'emerge --sync', and some other things when I last used it- all locally on the 'Book.
I've looked through the kernel config for something I missed, removed OF Framebuffer option per one post I found, and looking in dmesg nvidiafb appears to be working:

I also added 'video=nvidiafb:1024x768-32@60' to the kernel command line to no avail.
I found the Working 5.4.x kernel-config for PowerMac/PowerBook G4 thread and applied that config to 5.4.48 (the closest 5.4 I have available), but still the same.
Even the original 4.19.57 kernel exhibits the problem. So, I'm at a loss. Anybody have any ideas? |

That did occur to me, but I discounted it because
(a) while I haven't sat with a stopwatch and timed it, it does seem to be incredibly consistent- like 1 minute exactly. If I'm quick, I can log in and maybe run 1 command before it shuts off.
(b) If I shutdown -r now, the backlight comes back on
However, I just tried another test by booting into OpenFirmware and letting it sit, and sure enough the backlight shut off in the same amount of time. 
I typed in mac-boot and by shining a flashlight down the screen I could see it booting.
So yes, unfortunately appears to be a hardware issue.
Any thoughts on whether it's the inverter board or the CCFL tube itself? If I can pick up one or the other cheap enough, might go for it. |
