Just finished emerging Gnome on a systemd machine. When I run Terminal, it sits there with the icon indicating Terminal is loading with the swirling circle... then it disappears and looks like I never tried runnign anything. How do I diagnose and fix this?

Try switching to console by pressing
CTRL+ALT+F2
Then login as your user and append in
~/.bashrc
Code:

export TERM=gnome-terminal

Won't that cause all bashes that are run in other terminals, such as the Linux console, to report an incorrect $TERM? Why would this fix the problem of gnome-terminal not starting?

OP: can you run other programs? Does plain xterm work? Is there any useful output written to stderr?

I can run Web (It's what I'm using now) but I am a little lost- It's been a long time since I had a Gentoo machine, and even longer since I've used Gnmoe. The UI is REALLY different now- I can't even find where I would run a command line in X- Anything I run is from another terminal or over ssh. Any suggestions? (Besides merging KDE ad hoping I can work in it?)

I have not used GNOME in many years, so I cannot help with its current UI. Running an xterm from another terminal is fine though, and is the most straightforward way to capture the stderr from the launched xterm. I cannot help with KDE/Plasma either. You could try using twm. ;)

What terminal is installed? (Just gnome-terminal?) Emerge another, different, terminal and see what happens. I suggest you try x11-terms/sakura. It's light and not DE specific. Then find it in the menu and see what happens.

Realize that Gnome and KDE are not the only choices, and although reasonably popular, may not be your best choices.

I tried Sakura and it worked. I tried unmerging and remerging gnome-terminal and no dice. Thanks for pointing out Sakura- at least now I have a terminal!

Did you try to diagnose issue? What happens when you run gnome-terminal from Sakura?

Hadn't even considered running gnome-terminal from Sakura!'Here's the output:
Code:
~ $ gnome-terminal
# Error constructing proxy for org.gnome.Terminal:/org/gnome/Terminal/Factory0: Error calling StartServiceByName for org.gnome.Terminal: Timeout was reached

What does that mean?

Thanks!

Google-Fu says that it is related to locale setting. Did you set it up? https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Localization/Guide#Setting_a_locale

For example: https://askubuntu.com/a/608338

I remember facing this issue in another distro a few years back. Re-configuring locale did the trick.

Looks like I went through during installation and never went back to run through the systemd part. It was the locale. I'm back in business- thanks for the help!
