As my signature now says I have finally decided to drop my libre friendly x200 in favor of a more modern Thinkpad 2nd gen E series laptop with amd inside, as I just moved all of my ssd files and the like to an nvme format; it is quite bizarre compiling and not hearing my laptop fan buzz like a hornets nest (for that matter waiting 1 day and a half compiling) or having my i3 rice be extremely snappy. (A surprise that was practically night and day! ) however I now ask the community here and now! What is a hardware change that resulted in a surprise for y'all? _________________ Just ended my friendship with x200, now E14 gen2 amd is my best friend. |

Not quite sure what you mean by "moved all of my ssd files and the like to an nvme format." _________________ Andy Figueroa

I suppose a better way to phrase it would be I went from sata 2.0 to nvme format? Oof I typed that up rather odd didn't I? _________________ Just ended my friendship with x200, now E14 gen2 amd is my best friend. |

The only surprising result I can think of was switching to an SSD. I didn't experience the amazing improvement reported by others. Although it went from an HDD with Windows 10 to Gentoo with an SSD, so it probably isn't a "fair" comparison. Boot isn't visibly faster than any HDD, not that I'd expect it to be. And I don't use many "slow" applications where load time would be noticeable. Due to CPU throttling during compilation and wanting to limit SSD wear, I switched to compiling in a chroot on a different system and installing binaries. Additional surprises were learning that SSD erases aren't secure. And that SSD full disk encryption has some issues needing free space for lead leveling or some other wonky solution to make the tech work. Performance may be better, but otherwise it seems like a step backward in functionality. _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |

Changing my primary desktop from an
AMD Phenom(tm) 8650 Triple-Core Processor (2300 MHz max) with 8 GB RAM to:
Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2600 CPU @ 3.40GHz with 16 GB RAM
was a refreshing blast that exceeded my expectations.
The i7 slowed down quite a bit as a result of mitigating CPU vulnerabilities through the kernel, but it's still quite good for 10+ year old technology. I still use spinning rust and am not on a rampage to upgrade. _________________ Andy Figueroa
