Hello there,
Possibly this message may belong better in 'Networking & Security' - it's a bit of both and wasn't too sure. Anyway . . .
Some time in 2021, my Gentoo-powered laptop decided to stop recognising the wireless network card. I looked into this and all the recent updates done, but was unable to get to the bottom of it, so resorted to using an ancient, clunky, but still working backup Gentoo laptop.
I've now decided to return to the faulty laptop and try and work out what on earth is going on (using an ethernet cable). The thing is, the wireless card is detected at boot and works for a few minutes absolutely fine. But then, after a while, it just seems to disappear, as far as the kernel is concerned anyway.
Here's the output when I try to run /etc/init.d/net.wlp1s0 start:
Code: | * Bringing up interface wlp1s0
* ERROR: interface wlp1s0 does not exist
* Ensure that you have loaded the correct kernel module for your hardware
* ERROR: net.wlp1s0 failed to start

The correct kernel WAS loaded for this network card, as it had been working previously, so what's happened?!
This might be useful - this is the output from lsmod:

So I'm a bit baffled. Is it time to say goodbye to this laptop? Could it be a hardware fault? I was thinking about booting up with some other distro using an .iso image on a USB drive, just to see if the network card is detected and remains that way. Would that be a useful exercise?! It is getting on for 6 years old but, apart from a few dodgy keys on the keyboard, is otherwise working absolutely fine.
Many thanks in advance.

i think your hardware should be well-supported (by now).
- check bios-settings ("exotic" wireless/network-settings) and "hotkeys"
- check that you did not accidentally switch wireless of with a hotkey or hardware-switch
- check dmesg for anything related to wireless and the interface name
- check for any programs/services that might automagically (re)configure your network, rename interfaces etc
- find out the exact harware revision (lspci) and check your kernel/module-settings and maybe get the latest/correct firmware
maybe the hardware is broken, so booting with a live-distro might be a good idea. if it works, you can find out wich softare/settings are needed.
GOOD LUCK! _________________ DUMM KLICKT GUT. |
