I'm trying to install Gentoo on a Sun Blade 1000 workstation. However the latest live CD causes a kernel panic when trying to boot. I also tried sparc64 port of Debian 10, but it gave the same kernel panic at boot. The message is Code: | Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill the idle task! | I cannot get more information of the panic, because there is no way to scroll up.
I was able to boot the computer with older Gentoo live CD from 2014, but the kernel in that was too old for compiling the latest gentoo packages. |

Sorry for the late reply:
The bug is present in both the kernels used by us and debian: definitely a scary thought....
I think the best way forward is to boot the working one from 2014, and try to compile a semi new kernel. I'm pretty sure we use 5.15 in our live CDs. If that is causing problems, try an earlier one. Once you have a working install, it will be easier to figure out the problem on these newer kernels :)
Best of luck! |

Hi,
I normally use sysresccd 5.3.2 for my installs. Did you try to boot with it? If you need the iso, let me know, I will upload it to droppy and pm you the link.

This is SPARC.... your arch-linux sysreccd won't run :). There is us, and there is debian: we're all that is left.
Of course, there is also the BSDs, but I doubt their liveISOs will help you install gentoo :D. |

Is there any solution to this? It seems to still be a problem with the latest minimal installation iso for sparc. |

Quote: | The qla2xxx module (for the builtin Fibre Channel (FC) controller) should be blacklisted (with e.g. modprobe.blacklist=qla2xxx in the kernel command line) as otherwise the Linux kernel will panic soon after loading it (tested with 4.16.5, see this post on the linux-scsi mailing list and this post on the debian-sparc mailing list for details). This means that FC disks cannot be used with the builtin FC controller of the 280R. This might also apply to the similar systems Blade 1000 and 2000. |
I found this in https://wiki.debian.org/Sparc64 , worth to checkout. _________________ AMD FX-8300 / Loongson-2f (lemote-yeeloong) |
