|
|
I have a Gentoo guest VM running in VirtualBox under W10. It has worked fine ever since I installed it over a year ago, but more recently, the two latest stable kernels will not boot. The boot process stops after printing "Loading initramfs", so technically it looks like an initramfs rather than a kernel issue.
5.15.11-gentoo - boots.
5.15.16-gentoo - does not boot.
5.15.19-gentoo - does not boot.
I'm using dracut to generate the initramfs and verified that the current dracut version was installed before the 5.15.11 kernel, or during the same world upgrade.
Any ideas how to debug this? I *think* I tried rd.debug a while back but got no additional output at all. Recovery mode also suffers the same fate.

Are their modules maybe compressed?
Code: |
grep CONFIG_MODULE_COMPRESS .config

They are not - CONFIG_MODULE_COMPRESS_NONE=y for all kernels involved. |

"Gentoo guest in Virtual Box won't boot" looks like a better title to me. |

Solved it, thanks to Neddy, who put me on the right track
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-1140839-start-0.html
Review of this discussion led me to the Gentoo wiki, of all places,
https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/VirtualBox, the Gentoo guest kernel config section. I was indeed missing the Generic Framebuffer for kernel 5.15 and later option.
The old kernel config continued to work up to 5.15.11, so I didn't suspect kernel version 5.15 config as the problem. |
