XFCE4's terminal won't open at all, and gnome-terminal just gives me a blinking cursor with no prompt. I don't have this problem at all if I login as root.
Bash seems to work perfectly if X isn't running.
I've reinstalled Gentoo 3 times now, and this is the 2nd time this has happened - no problems the first time, should of left well enough alone, I guess.
This is how I created my regular user: Code: | useradd gentoo -m -G users,wheel,audio,games -s /bin/bash
passwd gentoo | Is that the right way to do it?
I noticed that including Unix PTY support in the kernel has solved this for others, but I tried it and it didn't work. |

It sounds like you are missing something in the kernel.
support for pty and so on.
can you login as root before starting X and tail - fthe sys log.
then start X on another console and open a terminal.
press control +alt +F? to the console where you have the syslog running and check for messages.
what does it say ? _________________ linux: #232767 |
