I am running a vanilla 2.4.22 and I was following the instructions in the HOWTO on the forums where you ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge bootsplash, then you do the ebuild config. When I did so I got the following error:

you can try another kernel, i recomend ck-sources, its very good for the desktop and its ready to go with those patches.
2.4.22 is bugged anyway , so you should upgrade
